5 Tips to Reduce the Stress of Renovation

The new year has arrived and nothing says change quite like a renovation. If you’re in the middle of planning one, we’ve got you covered. Here are five tips to reduce the stress of remodeling your home!

1) Budget
Your budget is the most important thing to consider when renovating. Once you’ve mapped out which room (or rooms) you’ll be tackling, make a list of what you’d like to fix up, how much you’d be willing to spend and extra for a contingency fund.

2) Identify
Once a budget has been clearly defined, it’s time to evaluate things in the renovation that are must-haves and what could be up for discussion. Perhaps it’s a light fixture or type of flooring. Remember, there will always be time to update in the future so it’s up to you what you want to spend money on now vs later.

3) Recycle
Save time and money by using existing appliances or pieces that could work with your reno. If your cabinets are in good shape, perhaps giving them a strip and stain will save cost in the budget.

4) Schedule
During the renovation, depending on where it is in your home, it might prove difficult to keep to your schedule. Be sure to have housing plans squared away with friends, relatives or a hotel beforehand if your reno will require you to be out of your home. Alternatively, if you are able to stay in your home during renovations, take care to adhere to a schedule as much as possible, working around the reno as necessary.

5) Flexibility
Renovations take a good deal of flexibility. It’s important to remember that things may not always go to plan. Materials and fixtures may take longer to arrive or certain things will take problem solving, but trust in your contractor. You’re in good hands!
